hello, I 'm caro. Can anybody help me, please?
When you tell the time, what is correct:
it's twenty past three or it's twenty minutes after three?

You can never say "20 after 3".

Thanks a lot for your help, because I didn't know what to do...
So the way we,French, learnt how to tell the hour
with "past and to" is the right one. Maybe the site I told you about
showed an american way to tell the time, sometimes Americans
used words that are quite different from English . Take care . Caro;

"Twenty after three" is perfectly correct.

Although I will more often say "Three-twenty."

"Twenty past three" is British, I think.

Hello,

you have to teach the English language, then I think you'd better say
twenty past three ;

I also think your pupils will be very interested in knowing the American way and you can tell them about it. Take the opportunity to tell them about the time difference between countries; my young pupils liked it when I explained that and one year later they are still able to say what time it is in Sydney when it is 9 a.m. in France !

yes of course !! I started to explain the famous "what time is it?" and they understood from 2.00 to 2.30, but I didn't go further because it is hard for them; then I told them about the time difference in French !!!
they are willing to learn that sort of things; no matter if you explain in French, it is part of the opening towards the world, which is very important !

I really think that if my generation (45) had only been taught English this way whose aim is first to open the world to children and to drive them to communicate with other people and to know about other ways of life, we wouln't be so many to be unable to say three words in this language without making mistakes.

So if I have to resume

"Twenty after three" is correct.

"Three-twenty." is more often use

"Twenty past three" is right (that's was I was I learnt when I was at school) but British.

Je dirai non, mais peu usuel. Ce que vous entendrez le plus souvent en c'est twenty past three.
