How is it possible to ask such easy questions ? You ought to be able to answer them when leaving the elementary school !

I don't agree with you , I can tell you that most of children

leaving the primary school are not able to make a correct sentence!!!

Willy, I agree with you. Of course the best students will score 100%, but there are plenty of children whose English writing is relatively weak. They are native speakers, but they don't always write formal, gramatically correct English. I'm sure one would find the same situation in many other countries.

Of course ! You're quite right, alexgowes. I've read lots of articles about that topic : the situation is getting worse everywhere.
That's why I wrote " ought to be able" : it's their duty, which doesn't mean they are able to do so !

Carobd : do you really mean it when you say most of them just can't write correct sentences ?

To Billy:

I think there is a misunderstanding, I speak about french pupils, I

don't know English pupils. You don't believe me,????

It's really a pity I can't show you their copies .That is very simple:

They write just like they speak.

Hello Dear alexgowes : I have tried to do the exercice before reading the correct answers. I see that my answer in 3. is wrong, but I don't understand why !

1. Since their readers often assume that journalists are objective and truthful, do journalists have a responsibility (A) that other writers do not

2. The young composer, turning out countless jingles for short-lived television (C) commercials, was tormented by her sense of isolation from serious music.

3. In 1922 African-American educator Anna Julia Cooper earned a doctorate at sixty-six, (D) considered by most people for being an age for retirement

4. The earliest known encyclopedia still in existence (D) is the work of one person, Pliny the Elder, a Roman who lived almost two thousand years ago.

3. In 1922 African-American educator Anna Julia Cooper earned a doctorate at sixty-six, considered by most people for being an age for retirement.

The preposition and verb are incorrect. "Considered [by most people] to be..." would be correct. There is also a slight ambiguity with the object of the word "considered" because 3 nouns are present in the first clause (i.e., Anna Julia Cooper, a doctorate, and 66). This ambiguity is resolved in the correct answer "...an age at which most people consider retirement).

However, as was discussed, many native English speakers would give answer (D), or at least would speak that way in conversation.

Thanks for the correction : the ambiguity would be the same in French !
If you know other exercices of this kind, the ones really used at school in your country, you are welcome !
