salut
vous pouvez m'expliquez pourquoi certaine phrases anglaise ne se traduise pas du tout comme on s'y attendait
par exemple "how do you do" et comment on traduit "comment tu fais" alors?

that's right ,you know that when we want to take sth to sb we say "here you are " . so don't try to translate (mot à mot ) ,i think better translate the meaning .
goodbye .

Be careful not to use 'WE say' when you give an explanation about English, only natives can do so. You and I are not natives, therefore we'll have to use another way of saying the 'on' we use in French.
Compare :
Caz9 is British, she can say : "In England we drink a lot of tea."
You and I would have to say : "In England people/they drink a lot of tea." or "English people drink a lot of tea." (and it's always safer to add 'I think')
'YOU' can also be used with the impersonal meaning of 'on' (people in general).
ex :
When you GIVE something to somebody you say "Here you are!".
mot à mot = word for word

I think it'sbetter to translate the meaning.
I thought better of it. = On second thought I decided not to do it.

Hello yoshpam, How are you.

We are learning English and it is natural for all language to behave a natural method that you can't translate. It is the same in French and other language. You can't translate word by word you will be wrong. But you must make effort to understand the sens of the phrase and give the good explanation in English and you will become a Pan pel. How do you do is an introduce form to wish someone a welcome to you "enchanté in French".
We are the French but if we want we can speak English well.
Bye

As you asked me to help you, please allow me to correct a few things :
'How are you.' is a question -> How are you ?

it is natural for all languages to behave in a way that you can't translate. It is the same in French and other languages.
You can't translate word by word or you will be wrong.
But you must make efforts/an effort to understand the meaning of the sentence and give the good explanation in English and you will become a penpal. 'How do you do' is a phrase you use to wish someone welcome like "Enchanté!" in French.
We are French but, if we want, we can speak English well.
A pAn is a thing you use to cook in. A pEn is a thing you write with.
A sentence is 'une phrase' in French, a phrase is 'une expression'.
If you make short sentences it will be easier. ;)
