Ex 199/still hoping, but weary
Message de here4u posté le 14-03-2021 à 21:35:03 (S | E | F)
Hello, dear Friends!

I) Translate into French:
Here's the sequel to the preceding passage. Gilbert is still talking to his sister Rose.

«Yes, Rose, I remember it all: and I can forgive your uncharitable conclusions; for perhaps, if I didn’t know her myself I’d put all these things together and believe the same as you do: but thanks God, I do know her ; and I should be unworthy of the name of a man, if I could believe anything that was said against her, unless I heard it from her own lips. – I should as soon believe such things of you, Rose.»
«Oh, Gilbert!»
«Well, do you think I could believe anything of the kind, - whatever the Wilsons and Millwards dared to whisper?»
«I should hope not indeed!»
«And why not?- Because I know you.- Well, and I know her just as well.»
«Oh, no! You know nothing of her former life; and last year at this time, you didn’t know that such a person existed.»
«No matter. There is such a thing as looking through a person’s eyes into the heart, and learning more of the height, and breadth, and depth of another soul’s in one hour, than it might take you a lifetime to discover, if he or she were not disposed to reveal it, - or if you had no sense to understand it.»

Anne Brontë, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

II) Optional: Gossip (and social networks…) can destroy – or make – a reputation… (130 words.)

This exercise is a and the correction will be online on Tuesday March 30th, 2021.

Of course, I know THE FORCE will be with You!

Anne Brontë, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.*

II) Optional: Gossip (and social networks…) can destroy – or make – a reputation… (130 words.)

A gossip can become a rumour that spreads.True or false, every ones will believe it because it's the son-in law of so and so's wife who knows it from a good source.Hearsay and fake news can wreak irreparable havocs that stick to your skin of a lifetime.A rumour can also increase a singer's, author's or politician's standing, in the same way as a packet of washing is sold; on the other hand can bring him down just as quickly.
per example.
-this actress is dead...(she is no longer receiving scripts )
-Such a lingerie shop makes women disappered...( the shop goes bankrupt)
-A politician is accused of wrongdoing and is forced to resign.
Speech is silver, but silence is golden(128)

Dear Here4U

I loved the last four lines... Two hours of deep attention, and the translation is in front of you... but isn't that a perfect contradiction? The future will tell me…

READY TO BE CORRECTED

READY TO BE CORRECTED

A gossip becomes destructive when it passes from a gossip in small committee to word of mouth which spreads a ill-intended information whose veracity is doubtful and which can be transformed when each individual who listens to it, brings his/ her own elements; according to his/her opinions
. The social networks cause extreme damage because the rumors are spread on an international population, more quickly and massively. It becomes a real intoxication that starts either from a malicious, jealousy, hatred, or revenge. The consequences are sometimes dramatic depending on whether the rumor has an origin touching the professional life, public or personal: then, it is the open door to real tragedy
Sometimes the rumor can make a reputation if this one praises a person ...Then, her/his reputation is made… 129

Anne Brontë, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.
II) Optional: Gossip (and social networks…) can destroy – or make – a reputation… (130 words )

Do you remember the "subliminal messages" broadcasted on TV advertising breaks which several years ago started influencing people in order to unconsciously convince them to buy something?
Nowadays the social networks have "incorporated" and improved that technique, enormously increasing their influence on the masses who, like herds of sheep, are influenced by shepherds and sheepdogs.
Far from me to lump things together without discrimination but it’s now understandable how a reputation can easily be made or destroyed, independently of one’s merits or demerits.
Even the great historical figures do not escape from this medieval sentence to the stake, and are also subjected even to materially attempt to erase their memory as recently happened in the US. Will the next step be the bonfire of their works? 127

The restriction about the allowed number of words didn’t allow me to express myself more exhaustively in the second part of the exercise. Anyway I thank you very much and I wish you a nice Sunday, irrespective of the circumstances.
So long.
Joe39

Hello Here4U
Thanks a lot again, these are wonderful exercises that make us think and have a great time too

Anne Brontë, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

II) Optional: Gossip (and social networks…) can destroy – or make – a reputation… (130 words.)
Gossiping is human and has always existed. Nowadays, more and more people gossip on social networks as well. As gossiping usually tends to misrepresent reality, caricature facts, amplify other people's words, point an accusing finger at people they hardly know, it often leads to blames, mocking, insults, when not threats of death. A single word can destroy a person's life as people react immediately without thinking properly, without knowing what really happened : getting people to react has become more important than seeking the truth, and like sheep, people follow...
Well, it's such a shame it's come to this. We should all learn not to judge without knowing. (111)

I) Translate into French: Ready to be corrected.

Anne Brontë, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.

Thank you very much!

Beginning of the century: Loana became famous through the program ‘The Loft’ and all of a sudden many young girls and boys imagined that the same thing could happen to them. And as it seems that to live is to be seen for better or for worse, they publish all what happen to them on the net. And unfortunately the worse often happens and several young who had been laughed at or who had casually let a photo be published have tried or even committed suicide at a very young age. So yes we can say that one must be very careful about what they say or write on the social networks

That's it - not exactly my liking but I hope that'll do -

Hello, my dear Here4u!
Hi everybody!

FINISHED!

Here is my work:
I) Translate into French: Here's the sequel to the preceding passage.

Excellent passage, merci !!!

II) Optional: Gossip (and social networks…) can destroy – or make – a reputation… (130 words.)

Whatever you do, you will always be criticized, so live your own life, without worrying about gossip... Socrates taught us : "If what you have to tell me is untrue, ugly, unuseful, why do you tell me?"
On social networks, most people expose themselves unnecessarily, and worse, expose their loved ones... perfection does not exist, so why ? That must remains strictly private, unless his/her ego is oversized, his/her will to become famous by making the buzz ... The boomerang always comes back. I do hate gossip!!! I neither listen to them, nor disclose them. No matter what people's lives, everyone makes their choices, as long as that choice doesn't hurt anyone around you! Don't do to others what you wouldn't want to be done to you... to meditate! 130 words.

THE FORCE will be back to You!
Thanks Here4u, this topic was great, I love it! Have a sweet week!
Stay safe!
See you soon.

Thanks a lot for your very good work and your great effort!

(2) «I do know her» est la forme emphatique (d’insistance).
(3) «I should as soon believe»= I might as well believe.
Ils le font en anglais : the Wilsons and the Millards.

Optional: Gossip (and social networks…) can destroy – or make – a reputation… (130 words.)
