Oral/ idea of progress
Message de anna40 posté le 15-05-2018 à 19:01:54 (S | E | F)
Bonjour,
je passe mon oral dans pas très longtemps et j'aimerais beaucoup que vous m'aidiez à corriger mon script s'il vous plait.
Merci pour vos réponses. :-)

I am going to talk about the notion Idea of progress. First of all I would like to give a definition of this notion: the idea of progress can be defined as an improvement, a development or a change like a technical, scientific or social advance which contributes to making the world a better place. Improvement can be made in a lot of sectors: medical, technological, scientific or even social. Usually, make progress means to develop and modernize our societies. However, we are going to see that’s not what happens every time. Is advancement always positive? That’s what we will ask by focusing on the positive sides of development before seeing the bad sides.

I
There is no denying that in a lot of sectors; a lot of improvements have been made. For example, we have seen in class in a document called obedience or choice that relationships between men and women has visibly changed for the better, evolving from submission and obedience for women towards equality. It's a social progress. Indeed, this document gather two text, one of them is an extract of a Shakespeare’s' play. In this text, Kat explains that wives should obey their husbands, be submissive. It's the idea of a weak, inferior woman versus a tall, bold and brave man. While the second text represents more today's society, a society where man and woman complete each other, they are on an equal footing. The picture we studied in class who shows
a woman taking care of her child at work represents the same idea. Nowadays, you can combine job and family. Yet, they are still some form of progress to make, relationships between men and women are not always equal. There are new forms of submissions with the sexual harassment or sexual tourism in Thailand. In some countries, there are not been a single step forward, that's the case in Saudi Arabia or in Afghanistan. So, even if women's right are evolving in most countries and that's an example of a good and positive social progress, they are still advancement to make.

II
However, advancement isn’t always positive. The audio document a longer life that we studied in class shows that medical improvement can be negative. Indeed, in this document, a woman explains that science finds a way to reverse the ageing process. Thanks to this scientific advance, we could end up living longer, healthier lives, free from age-related illnesses like Alzheimer’s and heart disease. To my mind, this can’t be considered as a social advancement even if it’s a huge scientific advancement because instead of beat back death we should accept it. Moreover, it’s obvious that there will be problems of overpopulation.
We also saw in class that progress does not mean necessarily improvement but sometimes decline. We studied in class a video about Darwinism versus creationism. First of all, Darwin is a scientist who is known for his theory of the evolution. According to this theory, all species of organisms arise and develop through the natural selection of small, inherited variations that increase the individual's ability to compete, survive, and reproduce. This discover allowed numerous scientific advances but at the time and today Darwin’s ideas are widely accepted, they remain controversial for they permanently dethroned man from his central place in the history of earth. We saw that in the Scopes Monkey trial. The Scopes Monkey trial is an American legal case in July 1925 in which a substitute high school teacher, John T. Scopes, was accused of violating Tennessee's Butler Act, which had made it unlawful to teach human evolution in any state-funded school. During this trial, Scopes is declared guilty while some arguments were simply ridiculous. For example, anti-Darwinism brought monkeys just to show that we don’t look like them. This case shows the difficulty to a lot of people to believe to Darwin’s’ theory but, it did not settle in time. Indeed, we saw on a CNN report that Darwin’s fight stills exists, only this time it’s creationism versus Darwinism. Michael Behe, a high school teacher is a major player behind intelligent design. Intelligent design is a religious argument for the existence of God. Proponents claim that "certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection, they think that you only have to look at the details to realize they were conceived and arranged by a supernatural power.

To conclude, it’s obvious that development is essential in our societies, it has benefits in our everyday life but we have to be careful because advancement might also be dangerous.
