Amitié ?
Message de harrypotter posté le 23-03-2007 à 00:19:30 (S | E | F | I)

tout le monde

On a un devoir en anglais concernant "Friendship and its disadvantages"

Alors j'ai proposé ce qui suit :

We can define friendship as the following: To have good relationship with somebody, to be his friend.

And I personally see that there are several disadvantages of it, because if we are friends with someone who is bad and who has noisily intentions, we risk to be as him or worst…

But the most important and dangerous is if this friend touches your personality and say to practise forbidden activities! So this is dangerous!...

Briefly, what I want to say and unveil, is that before to be a friend with someone and before to create relationship with people, we have to be sure that they are good and that their ideas thought are clean !...

I believe that the subject of the duty wants to push us to discover the advantages of friendship.
A friend is someone who on whom one can count.
Even he will not solve all our problems.

Hello harry!

-- as the following --> on dirait "as follows"
-- to have X good relationship with...--> article indéfini “a”
-- And I .... --> "and" est superflu
-- disadvantages of it --> “of it” est superflu
-- who is bad....etc. --> "who behaves badly" (to behave = se conduire) Cette expression englobe les 2 idées que tu essayais d'exprimer.
-- we risk + “V+ing”... Attention!
-- as him--> “like” him -- il faudra revoir l'emploi de as et like
-- worst --> “worse”

-- the most important and dangerous X is -> “thing” is........
-- touches your personality --> tu pourrais dire: "has a bad influence"
-- and say to practice forbidden activities -> tu pourrais dire: ”and leads you to do forbidden things”.
-- unveil --> je pense que tu veux dire--> “reveal”
-- before to be --> before + V+ing . Attention!
-- before to create --> before + V+ing. Attention!
-- relationship with people --> relationshipS (ici, c'est pluriel, à cause de "people")
-- their ideas thought --> "thought" est superflu et tu pourrais utiliser l'adjectif “good” plutôt que clean. Dans ce contexte, "well-intentioned" est tout à fait approprié.

Bonjour cathy31
To call a spade a spade, each person is viewed through its behaviour. When we get associated with badly behaving dudes, especially drug-addicts as you said, we may get skating in very thin ice.
Take care!

I'm going to follow the trend set by cathy31 by writing in my native language, as writing in French requires much more effort, and I'm much better at English - maybe I'm just lazy...

I must echo some of cathy31's sentiments, also. I feel quite uncomfortable talking about any 'disadvantages' to friendship, as it seems to me that it is something which only really has advantages, at least, in its purest form. A 'friend' who encourages you to do something 'bad', illegal or immoral cannot really be regarded a friend, in my opinion, rather an bad acquaintance, almost an enemy. I would call this a faux-friendship (NB you can use the French word 'faux' in English in this kind of expression, for a stylistic effect - it might be more normal to say 'false-friendship' though), and so I would not call this a disadvantage to friendship.

Having said this, it is possible that someone inadvertently picks up bad habits from their friends purely by being around them; their friend might not be aware this is happening, and would certainly not want to harm their friend in any way, but it could happen nonetheless. It is possible, in this way, to attribute a 'disadvantage' to being a certain person's friend, but it is also a feature of friendship that you should try to help a friend - and any friend worth having will listen.

Hello Mister,

I try to make some efforts. I'm going to answer in english even if I haven't a good standard of english.

You're too pragmatic. Relationships are so complicated and you can't deal with friendship from such a manichean view.
It's your point of view and I respect your opinion. But it's not mine.
When you say "each person is viewed throught its behaviour" you raise an important social issue. I think it's a pity people rely too much on appearances. Often, "bad behaviours" are a way to call for help. If I had a drug-addicted friend, I would help him. And I don't think I get skating in very thin ice. I hope friendship is over that kind of consideration.

Moreover, you quote an article. Great. But life is not a court and we're not lawyers. I've always refused to judge my friends but help them when they run into troubles or bad way of life.

To go back to the subject at hand, you can notice, dear Harrypotter, it's a really interresting topic which causes a lot of ink to flow !
Like Marlond, I feel ill at ease to combine friendship and disadvantages. I think it's better that one should combine relationship "disadvantages" with bad influence.

Thanks a lot for this "brainstorming" and good luck for your essay !
