Je ne comprends pas très bien : pourquoi doit-on écrire "I think mathematics is difficult to understand" alors que "mathematics" paraît être un nom indénombrable pluriel ? même chose pour "hair" dans la phrase "Mary's hair is very long" - Dans le test contenant ces phrasesn j'ai écrit "are" ????

Hello !
"Hair" = cheveux, chevelure. Ce nom représente un ensemble (chevelure).
"Hairs = poils.
Les noms en -ics sont suivis d'un verbe au singulier, sauf "mathematics, politics, statistics, athletics" qui peuvent aussi être considérés comme des pluriels :
- Politics is a complicated business.
- Company politics are sometimes vicious.
- What are your politics ( = political opinions) ?
- Statistics is a science.
- Have you seen the latest statistics ? They show a decrease.
- Mathematics has the same educational function as classics used to have. It is concerned with the study of number, quantity, shape and space and their interrelationships.
- Mathematics involve(s) mathematical operations and processes .
