Traduction de l'indéfini - correctio
Message de aud18 posté le 21-04-2007 à 11:40:59 (S | E | F | I)

Bonjour !

One never have to protact the next day what can be done.
2/ On vous demande au téléphone. You are called for on the phone.
We mustn’t bother him under any pretext.
4/ J’étais sûr qu’on ferait venir le contremaître. I was sure we would be sending for the foreman.
5/ Vous a-t-on dit de démissionner ? Are you told to resign ?
6/ On envoya chercher le plombier. We send look for the plumber.
7/ Le lit n’avait pas été défait. The bed hasn’t been stripped.
After some months she gets used to his new life abroad.
Since the 80’s we don’t stop talking about economic crisis.
We never make a mistake when we take the last results.
The fall of incomes is more sensitive that it is said
A door has to be opened and closed.

merci de votre aide

Check your past tenses! 5,6,7,8 and 9 are all wrong just because of the tenses! Look again at them, then I'll point out the rest of the mistakes.

6/ On envoya chercher le plombier. We have send look for the plumber.
7/ Le lit n’avait pas été défait. The bed hadn’t been stripped.
After some months she gots used to his new life abroad.
Since the 80’s we didn’t stop talking about economic crisis.

thanks.

One never have to protact the next day what can be done.
- ‘one never have to’ – Firstly, it would be ‘one HAS’. Secondly, one would say ‘one has never to’ if you were going to translate ‘il faut’ by ‘to have to’, but here it’s only really translatable by ‘must’. So, ‘one must never’, or more naturally ‘you must not/mustn’t’.
- ‘remettre’ here means ‘put off
- I’d translate ‘au lendemain’ as ‘till tomorrow’, and put a ‘today’ on the end of the sentence, so: ‘you must never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.

2/ On vous demande au téléphone. You are called for on the phone.
- You can’t really use ‘call for’ in the passive. I’d have the subject as ‘someone/somebody’ and translate ‘demander’ as ‘ask for’.

We mustn’t bother him under any pretext.
- Correct, but ‘for any reason’ sounds a bit better than ‘under any pretext’.

4/ J’étais sûr qu’on ferait venir le contremaître. I was sure we would be sending for the foreman.
- Correct

5/ Vous a-t-on dit de démissionner ? Have you told to resign?
- This is PASSIVE. You have the right tense, though, now.

6/ On envoya chercher le plombier. We have send look for the plumber.
- Check your past participle of ‘to send’.

7/ Le lit n’avait pas été défait. The bed hadn’t been stripped.
- Yep

After some months she gots used to his new life abroad.
- ‘Après quelques mois’ – ‘After a few months’
- Check your conjugation of ‘to get’ in the past (preterite) tense.
- SHE … HIS ??

Since the 80’s we don’t stop talking about economic crisis.
- Since + present perfect in English, so ‘since the 80s we haven’t stopped talking…’

We never make a mistake when we take the last results.
- You haven’t translated ‘en compte’.

The fall of incomes is more sensitive that it is said
- ‘more….THAN’, not ‘more…THAT’.
- ‘on ne le dit’ – don’t translate the ‘le’ – it’s not necessary in English.
- I’m not sure what the best translation of ‘sensible’ is…

A door has to be opened and closed.
- Open, not opened.
- ‘ou’ = ‘or’, not ‘and’

So....:
2/Someone is asking for you on the phone.
6/ We have sent look for the plumber.
8/After a few months she got used to her new life abroad.
10/ We never make a mistake when we considered the last results.
11/ The fall of incomes is more noticeable than is said .
12/ A door has to be open or close.
That's right ?I've got it ?

2/Someone is asking for you on the phone.
-Sounds good to me

6/ We have sent look for the plumber.
- Sorry, I didn't fully correct this one. Either: 'we have sent someone to get the plumber' or 'we have sent for the plumber'.

8/After a few months she got used to her new life abroad.
-Yep

10/ We never make a mistake when we considered the last results.
-'mistakes' woudl be better in plural - and check the tense of 'considered'! - it's not past tense in French, so why would it be in English?
-'derniers' might be 'latest' rather than 'last' here, depending on context.

11/ The fall of incomes is more noticeable than is said .
-Technically correct. Maybe 'the fall in [average] incomes'.
-'is said' isn't really that idiomatic - correct, though.

12/ A door has to be open or close.
- should be 'open or closed'.

Presque, aud! ... Tu y es presque!

6/ We have sent look for the plumber.
Tu as corrigé la faute mentionnée par marlond.
sent est correct maintenant.
Problème: "envoyer chercher (quelqu'un)"
On ne dit pas: to send look for (somebody), mais, “to send for somebody”.
donc, fais la correction appropriée.

10/ Auparavant, tu avais mis:
We never make a mistake when we take the last results.
Dans ton dernier post, tu as mis:
We never make a mistake when we “considered” the last results.

12/ A door has to be open or close

Bon courage!

Bonjour.

Voici quelques indications.

1- Never put off until tomorrow what you can do today.
Saying said to emphasize that you should not delay doing something if you can do it immediately.

Nouvelle version :
Procrastination is the thief of time

2- You are wanted on the phone.

3- Sur les écriteaux placés à l'extérieur des portes de chambres d'hôtel on peut lire : Do not disturb .

You mustn't disturb him on any account.

The plumber was sent for.

You mustn't disturb him on no account.
is a double negative - which we don't do in English.
"You mustn't disturb him on any account" would be okay, but I'd be more tempted to say "On no account must you disturb him" or "for no reason must you disturb him", but this is a little stronger.

There's nothing wrong with 'to bother' here, either.

Thank you very much for your help
It's not very bad in fact when I look it globally but I really think that I must work harder on my tenses
see you and have a nice day ( or maybe night...)
