Les blancs pensaient que les noirs étaient différents et inférieurs en intelligence et en caractère.
Anglais:
The whites thought that the blacks were differents and lower in intelligence and character.

C'est ce qu'on appelle du mot à mot.
Tous les mots y sont mais personnellement j'aurais fait différemment.

La seule vraie faute est "differents" : l'adjectif change rarement en anglais. "Different" reste le même mot pour homme, femme, singulier ou pluriel.
The whites used to think that blacks were different and of lower intelligence and inferior character.
Comme Bridg l'a dit, on t'aurait compris.

Instead of "lower", why not "inferior"? It's a perfectly good English word and fits the context perfectly.
And as a bonus, "inferior" looks like the French word that it translates. Of course, the word that looks the most similar isn't always the best translation, but when it is, it should definitely be used!

"Lower" and "higher" refer to a level. Intelligence is measured on a scale.
"Inferior" and "superior" are judgements of quality.
There are usually numerous ways of translating any sentence, of interpreting meaning and expressing ideas.
My offering was one possibility amongst many. However I still feel it is a valid and correct one. I shall continue to try to make such suggestions rather than spending time criticising other people's attempts to help.

I would have said "were of lesser intelligence and character."
