Synonyme de Wear

Message de phlppe posté le 22-09-2008 à 11:12:09 (S | E | F)

Bonjour,

est-il correct d'utiliser "to have on" pour remplacer "to wear",
dans le contexte suivant:
"she will come, having on a dress, or wearing a smock..."

Merci!

Bonjour.

"To have on" means to be wearing a piece of clothing.

I can't remember what she had on when I met her this morning.
Je ne me souviens pas de ce qu'elle portait quand je l'ai rencontrée ce matin.

Merci pour la réponse.
L'utiliser dans le contexte et la formule mentionnés ci-dessus est donc correct, isn'it?

Hello!

Yes, and if you have an object in the sentence (in your case "dress") then the "on" comes after it.

What did she have on?
She had a dress on. She had a pretty red dress on.

ah....
Dans ce cas:
"having a dress on" is correct,
but "having on a dress", is not.

Bonjour,
..'having a dress on ' est correct ;' having on a dress' n'est pas correct.
See you.

You would have got upset if I had told you such a thing!

bon...
je ne sais plus quoi en penser
D'après le "Cambridge Dictionnary", on peut placer le COD ou on veux:

Je voulais juste savoir si cette phrase était correcte, normale:
"she will come, having on a dress, or wearing a smock..."

travis !!!! l'art et la manière de rendre les choses simples compliquées !!!
tu l'as ta médaille d'or

Je redis ici : 'having a dress on ' est correct.
et le Cambridge dictionary dit la même chose:
"if you have clothes or shoes on, you are wearing them
I was okay because I had my winter coat on.
I didn't have any clothes on at the time."

Regards.

Ma chère Lucile, si je ne suis pas d'accord avec toi ce n'est pas toujours parce que je parle .

"Two little girl-Mites were standing in front of the looking-glass and talking. One of them was wearing a blue silk dress with a silk sash tied in a bow behind. She had blue eyes and dark hair which she wore in a long plait. The other girl-Mite had on a dress with pink and purple flowers in it, and she had curly flaxen hair that hung down to her shoulders."

Pris de Lien Internet
(un site britannique !!)

On peut bien:
have a dress on -ou- have on a dress
take the trash out -ou- take out the trash
look a word up -ou- look up a word
turn the TV on -ou- turn on the TV
etc.

Seulement s'il s'agit d'un pronom doit-il se placer entre le verbe et la particule.

have it on have on it

Phlppe, ta phrase est donc bel et bien correcte (même si je n'ai aucune idée du tout sur ce que c'est un "smock" ).

Hi travis,

smock
noun
blouse f, sarrau m.

That word must be a British English one

Pupils for instance used to wear one a lot of years before; they had smocks on when they were at school

Hi everybody!!

Let's face it! The poor girl was clothed. At least she wasn't naked. She was wearing a dress. She had on a dress. She had a dress on. Traviskid is right. There are certain verbs which can be right either way and unfortunatly some just cannot! And French is just as difficult!! (for us anglophones!!)

P.S. A smock est une blouse - comme les veilles italiennes ici portent!!

Hello again,
The link you gave may be an English site but the book was written by a Russian man and translated into English :

Nikolai Nosov

THE ADVENTURES
OF
DUNNO AND HIS FRIENDS

Translated from the Russian by Margaret Wettlin
Illustrated by A.Laptev

and as a matter of fact she is American :
Margaret Wettlin. Sur les routes russes, trois ans de guerre en Russie par une américaine, 1941-1944. Version française de Paule Montescourt (Reliure inconnue)
de Margaret Wettlin (Auteur), Paule Montescourt (Auteur)

Bonjour.

Il faut se rendre à l'évidence que " Have on " est un "phrasal verb".

Je lis donc dans :

Cambridge Grammar of English de Ronald Carter & Michael Mccarthy (Professeurs à l'université de Nottingham.)

page 432 §235c

Many phrasal verbs can be used with a direct object.
In most cases, the particule may come before or after the direct object, if the object is not a personal pronoun.

Examples

1- In Kent, burglars blew up a fireworks factory after trying to break in using oxyacetylene cutting equipement.
or
........ burglars blew a fireworks factory up ..........

2-We decided to put the meeting off for a couple of weeks.
or
We decided to put off the meeting for a couple of weeks

Ainsi on pourra dire :

« She had on lime-green slacks* and a purple nylon shirt.»
* pantalon (ample)

OK, so Ms. Wettlin may be an American, but the fact that her translation is accepted on an English site proves (or at least suggests) that her writing is tolerated (if not admired) by (at least some) English people.

And in any case, I believe Nottingham is in England (at least, I've never heard of Nottingham, Texas ), so taconnet's citation should be proof enough that both turns of phrase are acceptable even in England.

Isn't English exciting??? One small question and such an animated discussion.

I looked up Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, under the entry Which word 'wear/have on/carry' there's an example:
She had on some very unusual earrings.

I suppose in this example the object phrase is quite long that's why the particle goes first. What do you think? But it seems that both versions are acceptable.

Réponse: Synonyme de Wear de TravisKidd, postée le 23-09-2008 à 04:56:28 (S | E)
Yes, a long object phrase is one reason you might want to put it at the end, another reason might be if you want to emphasize it.

She had on a dress?!?!? She usually only wears T-shirts and jeans!!

Réponse: Synonyme de Wear de intrepid34, postée le 23-09-2008 à 07:58:25 (S | E)
And this is only one example of the subtle differences between American and English English.

LOL thanks for the link to smocks. From the pictures, it looks like a smock can be a gown, a blouse, a jacket ... or even a "full-body apron" of sorts.

To intrepid ... I must reiterate that the position of the particle is not one of the differences between American and English English. You can certainly "have on a smock".
